SAT Essay Writing Guide with Sample Prompts


Vibrant Publishers continue to produce books that give invaluable aid and assistance to students preparing for examinations at every level. This particular volume is unlike the others in that it takes on the ominous task of teaching the student how to approach an essay type question - always the more difficult part of any exam as it calls for thinking well on your feet, pulling together critical ideas and balancing it all so that the essay demonstrates the student's ability to express an idea logically and thoroughly.

Practice is what this book is all about. Within the covers of this well designed book are essay prompts associated with pre-essay writing guidance, how to master the strategies of writing in response to the prompt and then how to critique the resulting essay.

An example will make this more clear: Essay prompt - `We tend to think of creativity as spontaneous. The creative individual is suddenly inspired and rushes off the complete his masterpiece. If the artist were restricted to a schedule, his ability to perform would be stifled.' Assignment: `Does planning interfere with creativity? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken form your reading, studies, experience, or observation.' The student may answer in the affirmative or the negative or take a balanced approach - and the examples for each of these three alternatives is given with a complete sample essay following that demonstrates the prompt and assignment.

This is a different approach in preparing for an essay question and after reading the entire book of 50 sample prompts and possible responses the student just has to `get it' because it becomes so natural.
