The program is entirely merit-based, and according to NMSC, winners are selected without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. Each year, of the approximately 1.3 million students who meet the entry requirements, only about 50,000 of the highest scorers receive any form of recognition through the program. This means preparation matters considerably more than many students assume going into it. How Entry Works: The PSAT/NMSQT and the Selection Index To enter the competition, you must take the PSAT/NMSQT in the specified year of their high school program. For most students following a traditional four-year high school path, this means junior year — 11th grade. Sophomore scores do not qualify for the scholarship program, even if you score exceptionally well. Once you take the test, NMSC calculates what's called a Selection Index (SI) — a single number used to rank participants nationally and within each state. The formula is straightforward: the Selection Index equals two times the Reading and Writing section score, plus the Math section score. Because Reading and Writing is counted twice, it carries double the weight of Math in determining where you land in the competition. This detail matters a great deal. A student with strong math skills but an underdeveloped Reading and Writing section will find it significantly harder to hit a competitive Selection Index than someone who has trained both areas with equal attention. Cutoff scores — the minimum Selection Index needed to advance — vary by state, and NMSC does not publish them in advance. They're set after each year's testing cycle based on how students performed that year. According to data shared by NMSC, state-by-state cutoffs reflect each state's share of the nation's graduating seniors, which is why a student in a highly competitive state may need a noticeably higher score than someone taking the same test in a less competitive state. The Four Levels of Recognition Not every student who scores well walks away with a scholarship, but the program does recognize strong performance at several levels. Commended Students About 34,000 students each year are named Commended Students. These are high scorers who fall just below their state's Semifinalist cutoff but still place in the top tier nationally. Commended Students receive a Letter of Commendation sent through their high school and may be considered for special corporate-sponsored scholarships, even though they do not advance in the main competition. Semifinalists Around 16,000 students advance to Semifinalist status each year. These are the highest scorers within each state — representing roughly the top 1% of all test-takers — and their names are announced through their high schools in early September following the test. Semifinalists receive scholarship application materials and are eligible to compete for Merit Scholarships. Finalists To advance from Semifinalist to Finalist, students must complete an application that includes academic records, a school recommendation, and a personal essay. They must also take the SAT or ACT and earn a score that confirms their PSAT performance. According to NMSC, about 95% of Semifinalists go on to earn Finalist standing — which is itself a meaningful academic distinction when it comes to college applications. Scholarship Recipients From the pool of Finalists, approximately 7,500 students receive National Merit Scholarships. These come in three forms: the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships, which are often renewable and can be worth significantly more over four years. Winners earn the title of Merit Scholar. Why the Reading and Writing Section Deserves Special Attention Preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT means taking both sections seriously, but there is one aspect of the exam's structure that students aiming for National Merit recognition should understand early in their preparation. Look at the Selection Index formula again. Reading and Writing is counted twice, meaning it carries double the weight of Math in determining where a student lands in the competition. A student with strong math skills but an underdeveloped Reading and Writing section will find it significantly harder to reach a competitive Selection Index than someone who has trained both areas with equal attention. Here's a quick comparison of the old format versus the new: Important scoring changeStarting September 2025, the ACT composite score is calculated from English, Math, and Reading only. Even if you take the Science section, that score will not be part of your composite. It appears as a standalone score and counts toward your STEM score alongside Math — but it no longer moves your 1–36 composite number. So What's Actually on the ACT Science Section? Despite everything that's changed around it, the Science section itself is largely the same as it's always been — and that's actually great news for students prepping right now. The content, question style, and passage types are all very similar to the legacy test. Here's the most important thing to understand about ACT Science: it is not a science knowledge test. You don't need to have memorized the periodic table or know the stages of mitosis. What it tests is your ability to read, interpret, and reason through scientific information — graphs, tables, experimental data, and competing scientific viewpoints. The section has three distinct passage types, each of which requires a slightly different approach: Each passage type demands a different reading strategy — which is exactly why knowing which type you're looking at before you start reading is so important. What Skills Does ACT Science Actually Test? The ACT Science section tests three core skill areas. In the Enhanced ACT, you may see a slightly higher proportion of questions in the first two categories:  Interpretation of Data — Reading graphs, tables, and figures to identify trends, make comparisons, and draw conclusions directly from the data. Scientific Investigation — Understanding how experiments are designed, what variables are being controlled, and what the results mean in context. Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results — Analyzing scientific theories, making predictions, identifying assumptions, and comparing competing explanations.  Notice that none of these require you to recall specific science facts. They require you to think like a scientist — which is a skill that can absolutely be learned and practiced. "ACT Science isn't testing what you know. It's testing how well you can read, reason, and move through data under time pressure."    What's New in the Enhanced ACT Science Section? While the content has stayed largely the same, there are a few notable changes worth knowing:  5 more minutes — The section is now 40 minutes instead of 35, giving you slightly more time per question. This doesn't make the section easier, but it does reduce the extreme time pressure students used to feel. At least one engineering and design passage — The Enhanced ACT now guarantees at least one passage featuring engineering and design topics, reflecting a broader push toward STEM relevance. Slightly more emphasis on Interpretation of Data and Scientific Investigation — The frequency of questions in these two categories has increased slightly compared to the legacy test. No more standalone experimental section — The old ACT had a mandatory 5th section with unscored experimental questions. That's gone. A small number of unscored questions may now be embedded within the regular sections — but you won't know which ones they are. Good news for prep Because the Science content and question style are largely unchanged from the legacy ACT, all existing ACT Science prep materials — including full-length practice tests — are still highly relevant and useful. You don't need to start from scratch.  Should You Take the ACT Science Section? This is the question every student is asking right now — and the honest answer is: it depends. Here's a clear breakdown to help you decide:  One important note: if you take the Science section, the score will appear on your report regardless. You can't submit your ACT scores without the Science section included — so think carefully before you opt in. How Is the Section Scored? The ACT Science section is scored on the same 1–36 scale as every other section. But here's what's changed under the Enhanced ACT: Science no longer affects your composite score. Your 1–36 composite is now the average of English, Math, and Reading only. Science still produces a standalone section score. Colleges can see it — and some will pay close attention to it, especially for STEM applicants. Science still feeds into your STEM score. The STEM score is the average of your Math and Science scores, and it remains a useful signal for science and engineering programs. Science is not included in your ACT Superscore composite. But your individual section score can still be seen on your report, and some colleges may have their own policies that differ from ACT's official calculation. What Does This Mean for How You Prep? What the Question Is Actually Asking The official question stem usually reads something like: “Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?” That last part matters. The SAT is not testing whether you know what “prolific” or “tenuous” means in isolation. It’s asking which word fits this specific sentence, serving this specific purpose, in this specific context. In other words, the passage is doing most of the work for you. Your job is to read it carefully, not to reach for your vocabulary knowledge first. The Trap Students Fall Into A student reads the passage, gets to the blank, and thinks: “Okay, ‘arduous’ sounds smart. That could work. But so does ‘difficult.’ And ‘challenging’ is pretty similar too.” They go back and forth, second-guess themselves, and either waste time or land on a word they feel vaguely good about rather than one that’s correct. The issue here is that the student is comparing words against each other instead of checking each word against the passage. Those are very different activities, and only one of them is reliable. A Simpler Method That Actually Works Before you look at the answer choices, cover them. Read the passage and ask yourself: what kind of word belongs here? Not a specific word necessarily, just a general idea. Is the author looking for something positive or negative? Something that means “grow” or “shrink”? Something that signals contrast or continuation? Once you have that rough sense, go to the answer choices and look for the one that matches. You’re not picking the most impressive word. You’re picking the most accurate one. Here’s a quick version of the approach broken down: Read the full sentence (and surrounding sentences if needed) with the blank in mind. Predict the general meaning or tone the blank needs to carry. Eliminate choices that don’t match that meaning, even if the words sound sophisticated. Plug your remaining option back into the sentence and check if it truly fits. Context Clues Are Always There The Digital SAT is designed so that you don’t need to know every word’s definition to answer correctly. Each passage gives you enough information to figure out what belongs in the blank, as long as you pay attention to the surrounding text. Look for signal words. Transitions like “however,” “although,” and “despite” tell you the sentence is about to shift direction. Words like “furthermore,” “in addition,” and “similarly” tell you the sentence is continuing an idea. These small words are massive clues about what kind of word the blank needs to be. Also pay attention to what the subject of the passage is actually doing or experiencing. If a scientist’s findings are being described as groundbreaking, you’re probably not filling in a word that means “modest.” The passage will almost always point you in the right direction if you let it. When Two Choices Seem Similar This is where students lose the most time. You’ve narrowed it down to two words that feel nearly identical. What do you do now? Go back to the passage and look for the more specific detail. The SAT favors precision. If one word fits generally and the other fits precisely, the precise one wins. For example, “reluctant” and “unenthusiastic” are close, but “reluctant” specifically suggests resistance or hesitation, while “unenthusiastic” is more about lacking excitement. If the passage is describing someone who was pushed to do something against their will, “reluctant” is almost certainly the better answer. The key is to stop thinking about which word you like more and start thinking about which word the passage is pointing toward. You Don’t Need a Big Vocabulary to Score Well Here Here’s something worth saying clearly: many of the correct answers on “Words in Context” questions are not the most complex words in the set. Sometimes the right answer is a simple, clean word like “show” or “change” or “describe.” The wrong answers often sound more academic or impressive, which is exactly why students pick them. These five are the ones that come up most often on real SAT questions. 1. Solve Systems of Equations by Graphing This is probably the single most useful Desmos trick on the SAT. Instead of using substitution or elimination (which can get messy fast), you just type both equations into Desmos and let it show you where they intersect. That intersection point is your solution. How to do it: Type each equation on a separate line. The graph will show both lines, and Desmos will automatically highlight the intersection point. Click on it to see the exact coordinates. This works for linear systems, quadratic intersections, and even cases where one equation is an inequality. It’s fast, accurate, and far less error-prone than doing it by hand under pressure. 2. Find Zeros, Vertices, and Intercepts Instantly When a question asks for the x-intercept, vertex, or y-intercept of a function, graphing it in Desmos is often the fastest path to the answer.  How to do it: Type in the equation, and Desmos will plot it and label the key points automatically. Hover over any point to see its exact coordinates. This is especially powerful for quadratic equations, where finding the vertex by hand involves completing the square or using x = −b/2a — steps that are easy to mess up when you’re moving fast. Use Sliders to Solve for Unknown Constants When a question has an unknown constant (like “for what value of k does this system have no solution?”), you can type the equation into Desmos using the letter as a variable, and it will offer to add a slider. How to do it: Type the equation using a variable. Drag the slider and watch the graph change in real time until it matches the condition described in the question. It turns an abstract algebra problem into a visual one you can literally see. 4. Find the Line of Best Fit for Data Questions Problem-Solving and Data Analysis questions sometimes give you a set of data points and ask about the line of best fit — its slope, y-intercept, or a predicted value. Desmos handles this quickly with its regression feature. How to do it: Click the “+” button and insert a table. Enter your x and y values. Then, on a new line, type y = mx + b. Desmos will calculate the slope (m) and intercept (b) automatically and draw the line. 5. Calculate Statistics Without Ordering the Data Desmos has a built-in statistics function that can find the mean, median, minimum, maximum, and more from a list of numbers — and you don’t even need to sort them first.  How to do it: Open the keyboard icon, go to the Functions tab, and scroll to the Statistics section. Type median([14, 3, 27, 8, 11]) and it will return the answer instantly. On questions with messy data sets, this is a serious time saver. When NOT to Use Desmos This is just as important as knowing the features. Desmos can actually slow you down if you reach for it when you don’t need to. Here’s a good rule of thumb: if a problem would take you less than 20–30 seconds to solve by hand, just solve it by hand. Skip Desmos for simple linear equations you can solve in two steps, basic arithmetic and percentage calculations, and problems where typing the equation into Desmos would take longer than just working through it mentally. The goal is to save time, not spend it. 3 Mistakes to Avoid 1. Not practicing with it beforehand. Desmos is intuitive, but it’s not instant. If the first time you open it is during the real test, you’ll waste time figuring out basic things like how to enter a table or where the intersection point appears. Practice with it until it feels natural. 2. Zooming endlessly trying to find a point. If you graph something and don’t immediately see what you’re looking for, use the zoom controls or pinch to adjust the view. If you’re spending more than 30 seconds trying to find a point, consider switching to an algebraic approach. 3. Trusting the graph without confirming. Desmos shows you visuals, but on multiple-choice questions, always check that the value you see on the graph actually matches one of the answer choices. If it’s a free-response question, make sure you’re reading the coordinates precisely before entering your answer. Since the digitization of the SAT, the scoring system has become unpredictable and students beat their heads to find out where they went wrong (or right). In this blog, we will explore the mechanics behind the process of scoring, the parameters that the College Board uses to evaluate a test, and also look at some tips to improve your score. The Digital SAT (or SAT) consists of 2 sections called the Reading and Writing (R&W) and Math sections. Each section has 2 modules: the first one is an assortment of easy, medium, and hard questions and the second one includes easy or difficult questions as per a student’s performance in the first module. How a student performs in the first module decides the difficulty level of the next module. For example, if a student performs well on Module 1, the next module will be relatively difficult. College Board has adopted this Multistage Adaptive Testing (MST) model to ensure a fair testing experience for students across all knowledge levels so that every student gets an equal chance to score high and ultimately, get admission into their dream college. Both sections are scored on a scale of 200-800 with the whole test being scored on a scale of 400-1600. Test takers usually aim for a score above 1500 to secure admission to the college of their choice. To score 1500+ on the test, an average score of 750 must be secured for both sections. Of course, these are idealistic conditions and every student has his/her strengths and weaknesses. A student may find the R&W section a no-brainer but may struggle in the Math section and vice versa. These benchmarks indicate a student’s preparedness for college. If a student scores 480 on the R&W section and 530 on the Math section, he/she is ready for the first year in a credit-bearing college. In short, the benchmarks indicate whether a student is college-ready or needs more practice. Scoring Parameters College Board has provided some parameters upon which a student’s test is scored. Each question is worth 1 point and there is no negative marking for incorrect answers. Correct or incorrect answers: The most basic parameter is the correctness of your answers. If your answer is incorrect, you lose marks. Difficulty level of questions: All questions are assigned a difficulty level (easy, medium, and hard). Some questions are attributed for their higher difficulty and hence, hold more weightage than other questions. If you get these questions correct, your chance of a high score increases. You cannot know which question holds more weight so it’s better to answer all the questions even if you don’t know the correct answer. Content-based benchmarks: Both sections test a range of college-readiness skills. The R&W section tests vocabulary, inferencing, information synthesizing, and some quantitative data interpretation skills. The Math section tests the student across the domains of Algebra, Geometry, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Advanced Math. An 87th percentile in the Reading and Writing section means that the student has scored more than or equal to 87% of students who took the SAT in the last 3 years. Similarly, the student scored more than or equal to 65% of students who took the SAT in the previous 3 years. If you have appeared for the SAT multiple times, the scorecard can be a good indication of your strengths and weaknesses. The SAT tests students across four domains in each section: We can quickly analyze from the scorecard that the student’s strength lies in the R&W section but he/she needs more practice in the Math section to reach the benchmark of 530 or more. While you may have heard these tips a million times, following them consistently and diligently is the only way to achieve your desired score. 1. Expose yourself to a plethora of questions Exposing yourself to a plethora of questions will improve your reading comprehension skills and train your mind to find patterns. SAT questions are not rocket science—all questions have a certain logic and you just need to solve them many times to crack it. You will also become familiar with the language SAT uses and how it creates options and distractors to trap you. Find out your weak points and attack them By taking a simple diagnostic test you can find out your weak areas and create a study plan to practice. If your weak point is Advanced Math (which makes up 35% of the Math section), solve questions in that domain every day for 2 hours. You become aware of the sequence of questions (Words in Context questions are always asked first) which can help you plan the way you want to appear for the real test. If you wish to solve questions that you find difficult at the beginning, you can directly jump to them and get done with them. Practice tests also make you confident for the real test and leave no surprises for the end. Take timed practice tests at least once a week so that you can adjust your speed and know which areas to work on for the next one.
