The Evolving Landscape of Work and DEI
Shifts in Society and Work
Over the last three years, American society has experienced a shift in how we live, work, and develop relationships. The workplace has been significantly impacted not only by how people work but where they work. With these changes, there is a particular focus on workplace culture and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
National Issues and Organizational Responses
Understanding how to address issues like Affirmative Action in college admission processes, abortion rights, and same-sex marriages has been controversial and Supreme Court-worthy, dividing our country. Amid this national turmoil, many organizations have been called to task regarding social positioning. In response, there’s been an increase in diversity and social responsibility professions. However, a trend has emerged where organizations have started to abandon their DEI commitments, with headlines suggesting a lack of prioritization and the displacement of women of color, who largely occupy DEI positions.
Addressing DEI Challenges and Opportunities
Struggles with DEI Practices
With the reawakening of how a lack of DEI impacts people’s ability to thrive, organizations have struggled with best practices and authenticity in addressing these issues. A scarcity of experts and lack of common knowledge result in much trial and error. As the field matures and weeds out the bandwagoners, we begin to understand the key elements required for cultural shifts in workplaces.
The Role of Leaders in DEI Initiatives
Leaders are a unique piece of the DEI puzzle. However, the skill of inclusive leadership isn’t always intuitive and must be developed. This development is the organization’s responsibility, alongside a firm commitment to DEI from the President/CEO.

Key Elements for Organizational Change
Alignment and Commitment
Alignment of values around social issues is crucial as it reflects whether leaders authentically support the organization’s stance. This alignment must be analyzed to avoid adverse impacts on culture and DEI work. Commitment to behavioral changes is also essential, as leaders influence practices like hiring, development, and respect within the organization.
Processes, Systems, and Measurement
Processes and systems are critical for sustainable DEI change. Organizations can impact cultural, behavioral, and interpersonal shifts by evaluating and modifying these processes. Measuring DEI success can start with assessing leadership competencies and management outcomes.
Leadership's Role in Cultural Shifts
Leaders must be empowered to influence and implement organizational changes. When DEI actions tie into leadership performance requirements, they become organizational priorities. The role of the DEI leader is to provide the awareness, tools, resources, and skills necessary to lead a diverse workforce.
