At the foot of his dying wife’s hospital bed, Jamie Turner received what he calls the "most difficult gift" of his life: the realization that, despite his professional success as an author and CNN contributor, he had spent twenty-three years of marriage physically there but never truly present. This devastating moment of clarity became the catalyst for a radical personal transformation—and the blueprint for this book.
In Better: A Guidebook to a New and Improved You, Turner moves beyond generic self-help to provide a science-based manual for upgrading your personal and professional "operating system."
The book is structured around a unique, actionable framework called The Four Ms:
- Mindset: Learn to reframe limiting beliefs and rewire your neural networks to see challenges as opportunities for growth.
- Mentoring: Master science-based communication techniques to build deeper, more reciprocal connections and turn conflict into collaboration.
- Management: Discover practical strategies to manage your mental and physical well-being through a biological understanding of the "human energy field."
- Marketing: Develop a personal brand that authentically reflects your "better self" to the world.
Turner blends heart-wrenching experiences with rigorous scientific inquiry, exploring how our thoughts create neurotransmitters that shape our physical reality. From the electromagnetic fields generated by the heart to the "unspoken rules" of high-stakes leadership, Better provides a comprehensive guide for anyone who feels they are "climbing the next mountain" but missing the life right in front of them.
Engaging, vulnerable, and deeply practical, this book teaches you how to stop wallowing in the past and start using your history to build a future of presence, influence, and purpose. It’s time to stop dreaming about "what’s next" and start becoming the version of yourself the world—and your loved ones—deserve.

I have read widely in the personal development space for fifteen years and the most persistent frustration I have with the genre is its reliance on inspiration over evidence. Jamie Turner's Better is different. Every framework in the Four Ms is grounded in neuroscience, psychology, or behavioral research. The explanation of how limiting beliefs form as neural pathways that strengthen with repetition - and how conscious reframing creates competing pathways that can eventually become dominant - is accurate, accessible, and immediately useful. The scientific grounding does not make the book dry. It makes the practices credible and worth doing consistently.
I facilitate leadership development workshops for a national training company. Jamie Turner's Four Ms Framework is the most workshop-friendly organizing structure I have encountered in the personal development category. Each M is distinct enough to support its own full-day session while connected enough to create cumulative learning across the series. The reflection prompts at the end of each chapter translate directly into workshop activities. Turner's CNN contributor and Emory University background gave the content credibility with our senior-level participants who are often skeptical of personal development content. We have delivered this as a four-session series to three corporate cohorts with consistently strong feedback.
I am a senior woman leader in a manufacturing sector where leadership styles tend toward command and control. For years I had been trying to adapt my naturally collaborative and relationship-oriented approach to fit a model that did not suit me. Jamie Turner's Better - particularly the Mindset and Maximizing Performance sections - helped me understand that the leadership presence I was trying to imitate was not the only effective style. The book's treatment of authentic leadership - leading in alignment with your actual values and strengths rather than performing a role - was both liberating and practically useful. I stopped performing someone else's leadership style and my team's engagement improved almost immediately.
I have been in sales for eight years and consistently underperformed relative to my technical product knowledge and customer relationship quality. I knew I was capable of more but could not identify the constraint. Jamie Turner's Mindset section identified it within the first two chapters: I was carrying a set of limiting beliefs about my own worth in high-stakes negotiations that was causing me to subconsciously underplay my value and accept deals that did not reflect it. The reframing techniques Turner describes helped me interrupt that pattern during negotiations. My closing rate improved in the quarter after I read and applied this section.
I am a final-year undergraduate student who received this book as a gift from my mentor. I was initially skeptical about reading a leadership development book before I had any leadership experience to apply it to. I was completely wrong to be skeptical. The Mindset section gave me frameworks for thinking about my own beliefs and patterns before I embedded them in a workplace identity. The Mentoring chapter gave me a structure for building professional relationships intentionally from day one rather than hoping they would form naturally. The Maximizing Performance section gave me habits to establish before poor ones became automatic. Reading this before entering the workforce was the right time, not too early.
