The ACT Science section gives you 40 minutes to answer 40 questions across 6 to 7 passages. That is 1 minute per question. If you are reading each passage from top to bottom before touching a single question, you may be spending time on details that may never even be tested. The Problem With Reading Everything First ACT Science passages are deliberately packed with more information than you need. Every passage contains extra variables, additional trials, and supporting data that have nothing to do with the questions being asked. Reading it from front to back overloads you with irrelevant detail and eats into your limited time. The students who score highest on ACT Science are not the ones who know the most biology or chemistry. They are the ones who know exactly what to look for and where to find it fast. The following strategies are at the crux of our newly released ACT Science Practice Questions book. Step 1: Start With the Question, Not the Passage Before you read a single word of the passage or glance at a figure, read a question first. This single habit changes how the entire passage looks to you. As you read each question, do two things: Spot your easy wins first. Some questions point directly to something concrete — "Table 1," "Trial 2," "Day 5," "Plant B." These are your quick, guaranteed points. Starting with them builds momentum and makes the harder questions feel more manageable. Mark the keywords. Every question contains clues: specific numbers, trial names, direction words like increase, decrease, maximum, or minimum, and references to a specific figure or table. Flagging these tells you exactly where to search. Simplify the question. Most ACT Science questions come down to one clear task: finding a value, spotting a trend, or making a comparison. Restating the question in just a few words keeps your search fast and focused. For example, a question like "Based on Figure 1, as light intensity increased from 200 to 800 lux, how did the rate of photosynthesis change in Trial 3?" becomes simply: "Find photosynthesis rate trend, Trial 3, Figure 1." That is the only task.  Step 2: Scan the Answer Choices Before the Passage After reading the question, scan the answer choices before turning to the figure or passage. This tells you exactly what kind of task you are doing — and that changes your entire approach. Specific numbers in the choices mean you need a precise lookup or simple calculation. Trend words like increase, decrease, or constant mean you only need to track a direction, not find an exact value. Phrases from the passage mean you need to locate matching wording or a specific concept. This preview also sets up the Process of Elimination. You do not always need to find the right answer; crossing out what is clearly wrong is just as powerful. Choices that show an opposite trend, fall outside the range shown in the graph, or restate passage information without actually answering the question can often be eliminated before you even look at the data. Watch out for trap answers. The ACT frequently includes choices that copy exact numbers or phrases from a figure but apply them to the wrong trial, condition, or time point.  Step 3: Now Look at the Figure, Table, or Passage By the time you turn to the data, you know exactly what you are looking for and what form the answer should take. This is what makes the system fast. For graphs and figures, spend a few seconds on structure first: identify the axes, check the units, note the legend, and get a feel for the overall trend before zeroing in on specifics. For tables, use the exact labels from your question to navigate directly to the right row and column. For Research Summaries passages, identify the independent and dependent variables before anything else. For Conflicting Viewpoints, read one perspective at a time and keep each scientist's claim clearly separate before attempting any comparison questions. The key in every case: go to the data with a specific task.  Seeing It in Action: A Worked Example Here is what the three-step system looks like when applied to a real ACT Science question. Example Question Carbon exists in several forms, called allotropes, which have different molecular structures. Two common allotropes are diamond (a 3D lattice) and graphite (layered sheets). Recently, scientists have studied carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which are cylinders of rolled graphene.       Thermal conductivity is a measure of a material's ability to conduct heat, measured in Watts per meter-Kelvin (W/m·K). Scientists conducted two experiments to compare the thermal properties of these allotropes. Experiment 1        Scientists measured the thermal conductivity of pure samples of diamond, graphite (measured parallel to the layers), and CNTs at a standard temperature of 300 K. The results are shown in Table 1.  Table 1: Thermal Conductivity of Carbon Allotropes at 300 K A scientist predicts that the molecular structure of a carbon allotrope affects its ability to transfer heat. Do the results of Experiment 1 support this prediction? F. Yes; all carbon allotropes tested had the exact same thermal conductivity. G. Yes; different allotropes showed significantly different thermal conductivities. H. No; thermal conductivity depended only on temperature, not the material. J. No; diamond and graphite are both made of carbon, so their structures must be identical. Step 1 — Read the question first.Keywords to mark: molecular structure, carbon allotrope, ability to transfer heat, Experiment 1, support this prediction. A scientist predicts that the molecular structure of a carbon allotrope affects its ability to transfer heat. Do the results of Experiment 1 support this prediction? Simplified task: "Does Table 1 show that different structures produce different thermal conductivities?" This is a reasoning question, not a simple lookup. You need to evaluate whether the data backs up a claim. Step 2 — Scan the answer choices.All four choices combine a Yes/No judgment with a reason. That tells you immediately: you need to both find the data and evaluate it. Two say Yes, two say No — Process of Elimination will be very useful. Before touching the table, ask yourself: if structure does affect heat transfer, what would the data look like? Different allotropes should show different values. Step 3 — Go to the table.The passage tells you upfront that diamond, graphite, and CNTs all have different molecular structures. Now look at Table 1: diamond is 2,200 W/m·K, graphite is 3,980, CNTs are 3,500, and amorphous carbon is just 2. These values are dramatically different — exactly what you would expect if molecular structure affects heat transfer. Answer: G — Yes; different allotropes showed significantly different thermal conductivities. Notice the traps: Choice F says "Yes" but claims all allotropes had the same conductivity — directly contradicted by the table. Choice H introduces temperature as a variable, but the entire experiment was run at a single fixed temperature. Choice J sounds reasonable — both materials are carbon — but the passage explicitly states allotropes have different structures in the very first sentence. Every year, roughly 3.5 million students take the PSAT/NMSQT. The PSAT/NMSQT is also the official entry point for the National Merit Scholarship Program — an annual academic competition that has been running since 1955 and awards millions of dollars in college scholarships each year. Understanding what this program actually involves — and what it takes to have a real shot at it — is something every family with a high schooler should know well before junior year. What the National Merit Scholarship Program Actually Is The National Merit Scholarship Program is run by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a not-for-profit organization that operates independently of the government. It is not affiliated with any particular college or university. The program is entirely merit-based, and according to NMSC, winners are selected without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. Each year, of the approximately 1.3 million students who meet the entry requirements, only about 50,000 of the highest scorers receive any form of recognition through the program. This means preparation matters considerably more than many students assume going into it. How Entry Works: The PSAT/NMSQT and the Selection Index To enter the competition, you must take the PSAT/NMSQT in the specified year of their high school program. For most students following a traditional four-year high school path, this means junior year — 11th grade. Sophomore scores do not qualify for the scholarship program, even if you score exceptionally well. Once you take the test, NMSC calculates what's called a Selection Index (SI) — a single number used to rank participants nationally and within each state. The formula is straightforward: the Selection Index equals two times the Reading and Writing section score, plus the Math section score. Because Reading and Writing is counted twice, it carries double the weight of Math in determining where you land in the competition. This detail matters a great deal. A student with strong math skills but an underdeveloped Reading and Writing section will find it significantly harder to hit a competitive Selection Index than someone who has trained both areas with equal attention. Cutoff scores — the minimum Selection Index needed to advance — vary by state, and NMSC does not publish them in advance. They're set after each year's testing cycle based on how students performed that year. According to data shared by NMSC, state-by-state cutoffs reflect each state's share of the nation's graduating seniors, which is why a student in a highly competitive state may need a noticeably higher score than someone taking the same test in a less competitive state. The Four Levels of Recognition Not every student who scores well walks away with a scholarship, but the program does recognize strong performance at several levels. Commended Students About 34,000 students each year are named Commended Students. These are high scorers who fall just below their state's Semifinalist cutoff but still place in the top tier nationally. Commended Students receive a Letter of Commendation sent through their high school and may be considered for special corporate-sponsored scholarships, even though they do not advance in the main competition. Semifinalists Around 16,000 students advance to Semifinalist status each year. These are the highest scorers within each state — representing roughly the top 1% of all test-takers — and their names are announced through their high schools in early September following the test. Semifinalists receive scholarship application materials and are eligible to compete for Merit Scholarships. Finalists To advance from Semifinalist to Finalist, students must complete an application that includes academic records, a school recommendation, and a personal essay. They must also take the SAT or ACT and earn a score that confirms their PSAT performance. According to NMSC, about 95% of Semifinalists go on to earn Finalist standing — which is itself a meaningful academic distinction when it comes to college applications. Scholarship Recipients From the pool of Finalists, approximately 7,500 students receive National Merit Scholarships. These come in three forms: the $2,500 National Merit Scholarship, corporate-sponsored scholarships, and college-sponsored scholarships, which are often renewable and can be worth significantly more over four years. Winners earn the title of Merit Scholar. Why the Reading and Writing Section Deserves Special Attention Preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT means taking both sections seriously, but there is one aspect of the exam's structure that students aiming for National Merit recognition should understand early in their preparation. Look at the Selection Index formula again. Reading and Writing is counted twice, meaning it carries double the weight of Math in determining where a student lands in the competition. A student with strong math skills but an underdeveloped Reading and Writing section will find it significantly harder to reach a competitive Selection Index than someone who has trained both areas with equal attention. For students with a genuine shot at Semifinalist standing, this is worth factoring into how they divide their preparation time. Beyond the formula, the Reading and Writing section tests skills that don't always improve on their own through general reading or classroom exposure. The section covers four distinct domains — Craft and Structure, Information and Ideas, Standard English Conventions, and Expression of Ideas — and each one requires a slightly different approach. None of this means Math preparation takes a back seat. How Should a Student Ideally Approach the PSAT/NMSQT? The most effective starting point is a diagnostic test. Before doing anything else, you should understand where your points are going, which skill areas are already solid, and which ones need focused work. Jumping straight into practice without that picture often means spending time reinforcing strengths while weak areas go unaddressed. From there, practicing by skill category makes a meaningful difference. The Reading and Writing section tests 11 distinct skills across four domains. The Enhanced ACT is shorter, more flexible, and now gives students the option to skip the Science section entirely. Here's a quick comparison of the old format versus the new: Important scoring changeStarting September 2025, the ACT composite score is calculated from English, Math, and Reading only. Even if you take the Science section, that score will not be part of your composite. It appears as a standalone score and counts toward your STEM score alongside Math — but it no longer moves your 1–36 composite number. So What's Actually on the ACT Science Section? Despite everything that's changed around it, the Science section itself is largely the same as it's always been — and that's actually great news for students prepping right now. The content, question style, and passage types are all very similar to the legacy test. Here's the most important thing to understand about ACT Science: it is not a science knowledge test. You don't need to have memorized the periodic table or know the stages of mitosis. What it tests is your ability to read, interpret, and reason through scientific information — graphs, tables, experimental data, and competing scientific viewpoints. The section has three distinct passage types, each of which requires a slightly different approach: Each passage type demands a different reading strategy — which is exactly why knowing which type you're looking at before you start reading is so important. What Skills Does ACT Science Actually Test? The ACT Science section tests three core skill areas. In the Enhanced ACT, you may see a slightly higher proportion of questions in the first two categories:  Interpretation of Data — Reading graphs, tables, and figures to identify trends, make comparisons, and draw conclusions directly from the data. Scientific Investigation — Understanding how experiments are designed, what variables are being controlled, and what the results mean in context. Evaluation of Models, Inferences, and Experimental Results — Analyzing scientific theories, making predictions, identifying assumptions, and comparing competing explanations.  Notice that none of these require you to recall specific science facts. They require you to think like a scientist — which is a skill that can absolutely be learned and practiced. "ACT Science isn't testing what you know. It's testing how well you can read, reason, and move through data under time pressure."    What's New in the Enhanced ACT Science Section? While the content has stayed largely the same, there are a few notable changes worth knowing:  5 more minutes — The section is now 40 minutes instead of 35, giving you slightly more time per question. This doesn't make the section easier, but it does reduce the extreme time pressure students used to feel. At least one engineering and design passage — The Enhanced ACT now guarantees at least one passage featuring engineering and design topics, reflecting a broader push toward STEM relevance. Slightly more emphasis on Interpretation of Data and Scientific Investigation — The frequency of questions in these two categories has increased slightly compared to the legacy test. No more standalone experimental section — The old ACT had a mandatory 5th section with unscored experimental questions. That's gone. A small number of unscored questions may now be embedded within the regular sections — but you won't know which ones they are. Good news for prep Because the Science content and question style are largely unchanged from the legacy ACT, all existing ACT Science prep materials — including full-length practice tests — are still highly relevant and useful. You don't need to start from scratch.  Should You Take the ACT Science Section? This is the question every student is asking right now — and the honest answer is: it depends. Here's a clear breakdown to help you decide:  One important note: if you take the Science section, the score will appear on your report regardless. You can't submit your ACT scores without the Science section included — so think carefully before you opt in. How Is the Section Scored? The ACT Science section is scored on the same 1–36 scale as every other section. But here's what's changed under the Enhanced ACT: Science no longer affects your composite score. Your 1–36 composite is now the average of English, Math, and Reading only. Science still produces a standalone section score. Colleges can see it — and some will pay close attention to it, especially for STEM applicants. Science still feeds into your STEM score. The STEM score is the average of your Math and Science scores, and it remains a useful signal for science and engineering programs. Science is not included in your ACT Superscore composite. But your individual section score can still be seen on your report, and some colleges may have their own policies that differ from ACT's official calculation. What Does This Mean for How You Prep? If you're planning to take the Science section — which we'd generally recommend — the prep approach hasn't fundamentally changed. And then four answer choices, each offering a different word that could technically fit in the blank. Students often spend more time on these than almost anything else in the Reading and Writing section, which is ironic, because “Words in Context” questions are actually designed to be straightforward. The problem is not difficulty. It’s approach. Most students treat these like vocabulary tests. They aren’t. What the Question Is Actually Asking The official question stem usually reads something like: “Which choice completes the text with the most logical and precise word or phrase?” That last part matters. The SAT is not testing whether you know what “prolific” or “tenuous” means in isolation. It’s asking which word fits this specific sentence, serving this specific purpose, in this specific context. In other words, the passage is doing most of the work for you. Your job is to read it carefully, not to reach for your vocabulary knowledge first. The Trap Students Fall Into A student reads the passage, gets to the blank, and thinks: “Okay, ‘arduous’ sounds smart. That could work. But so does ‘difficult.’ And ‘challenging’ is pretty similar too.” They go back and forth, second-guess themselves, and either waste time or land on a word they feel vaguely good about rather than one that’s correct. The issue here is that the student is comparing words against each other instead of checking each word against the passage. Those are very different activities, and only one of them is reliable. A Simpler Method That Actually Works Before you look at the answer choices, cover them. Read the passage and ask yourself: what kind of word belongs here? Not a specific word necessarily, just a general idea. Is the author looking for something positive or negative? Something that means “grow” or “shrink”? Something that signals contrast or continuation? Once you have that rough sense, go to the answer choices and look for the one that matches. You’re not picking the most impressive word. You’re picking the most accurate one. Here’s a quick version of the approach broken down: Read the full sentence (and surrounding sentences if needed) with the blank in mind. Predict the general meaning or tone the blank needs to carry. Eliminate choices that don’t match that meaning, even if the words sound sophisticated. Plug your remaining option back into the sentence and check if it truly fits. Context Clues Are Always There The Digital SAT is designed so that you don’t need to know every word’s definition to answer correctly. Each passage gives you enough information to figure out what belongs in the blank, as long as you pay attention to the surrounding text. Look for signal words. Transitions like “however,” “although,” and “despite” tell you the sentence is about to shift direction. Words like “furthermore,” “in addition,” and “similarly” tell you the sentence is continuing an idea. These small words are massive clues about what kind of word the blank needs to be. Also pay attention to what the subject of the passage is actually doing or experiencing. If a scientist’s findings are being described as groundbreaking, you’re probably not filling in a word that means “modest.” The passage will almost always point you in the right direction if you let it. When Two Choices Seem Similar This is where students lose the most time. You’ve narrowed it down to two words that feel nearly identical. What do you do now? Go back to the passage and look for the more specific detail. The SAT favors precision. If one word fits generally and the other fits precisely, the precise one wins. For example, “reluctant” and “unenthusiastic” are close, but “reluctant” specifically suggests resistance or hesitation, while “unenthusiastic” is more about lacking excitement. If the passage is describing someone who was pushed to do something against their will, “reluctant” is almost certainly the better answer. The key is to stop thinking about which word you like more and start thinking about which word the passage is pointing toward. You Don’t Need a Big Vocabulary to Score Well Here Here’s something worth saying clearly: many of the correct answers on “Words in Context” questions are not the most complex words in the set. Sometimes the right answer is a simple, clean word like “show” or “change” or “describe.” The wrong answers often sound more academic or impressive, which is exactly why students pick them. If you’ve ever crossed out a simple word because it felt “too easy,” you’ve experienced this trap firsthand. The Digital SAT is testing your reading comprehension, not your thesaurus. The Bottom Line “Words in Context” questions reward students who read carefully and trust the passage.
