Operational Excellence Essentials You Always Wanted to Know offers a structured, real-world guide to designing processes, empowering people, and aligning day-to-day operations with your organization’s strategic vision.
Drawing from over two decades of hands-on experience, author Mike Hammann presents Operational Excellence (OpEx) as an integrated system that links customer value, culture, leadership, processes, and change management . Readers gain a clear understanding of Lean Management, continuous improvement, PDCA, Kaizen, and standardization, and how these elements combine to create a robust improvement engine.
The book explores cultural transformation, change management, and top-management commitment, showing how to build an environment where employees are trained, engaged, and encouraged to identify and solve problems. Dedicated chapters on quality management, the “magic triangle” of quality–time–cost, and the role of accounting and controlling help leaders connect operational improvements with financial impact.
Hammann also addresses visual management, KPIs, and the integration of technology and innovation into OpEx. Case studies, fun facts, pro tips, and a practical toolbox of methods make this book an ideal reference for entrepreneurs, operations and OpEx leaders, Lean managers, and students preparing for senior management roles.
After reading this book, readers will be able to design and sustain a culture of continuous improvement in any type of organization.

One of the persistent weaknesses of operational excellence literature is the dominance of manufacturing case studies. Process improvement professionals in administrative, service, and remote work environments are left inferring how principles translate. Mike Hammann explicitly provides case studies from all three environments - production, administrative, and remote - and the administrative and remote cases are as practically detailed as the production ones. As someone managing operations for a distributed professional services firm, I found all three perspectives directly applicable rather than needing to translate from a factory floor context.
Psychological safety is a concept I associated with HR and team dynamics literature. Mike Hammann's application of it to operational excellence is one of the most useful reframings in this book. Organizations cannot improve what they cannot see, and they cannot see problems that employees are afraid to surface. The connection between fear-based management cultures and slow improvement rates is not intuitive to many operations leaders who think of psychological safety as a nice-to-have rather than an operational necessity. This book makes the operational case compellingly and practically.
Many operational excellence frameworks are written for organizations with dedicated improvement departments, full-time kaizen facilitators, and large budgets for training and events. I lead a 12-person operations team with none of those resources. Mike Hammann's approach scales. The core methodology - identify real problems, build small standard improvements, track results, and make it a recurring habit - requires commitment and discipline rather than resources. Our team ran a meaningful improvement cycle last quarter with no external support using only the framework and practical tools from this book.
The operational measurement debate - process metrics versus outcome metrics, leading versus lagging indicators, efficiency versus effectiveness - usually generates more heat than light in operations discussions. Mike Hammann resolves it practically. The framework is simple: efficiency metrics tell you how well you are doing things; effectiveness metrics tell you whether you are doing the right things. Both matter, but most organizations measure only the former while wondering why improvement efforts do not translate to business results. Rebuilding our measurement approach around this distinction is the most significant change I am implementing this year.
Presenting operational performance to a board of directors is a persistent challenge when your board thinks primarily in financial terms and your operations run on process metrics. Mike Hammann's effectiveness framework gave me the bridge I had been missing. I now open every board operations presentation with the strategic alignment question - are our improvement priorities connected to where the business needs to go - before presenting any process metrics. That reframing has made board operations discussions more substantive and has elevated the strategic importance of our continuous improvement program.
