Preparing for my PMP, I wanted a practical companion on the people side of projects, and this fit well. The engagement framework aligns with PMBOK principles while staying grounded in real situations. The chapter on managing and monitoring difficult stakeholders was especially helpful.
After reading this book I completely redesigned how I approach project kickoffs. The stakeholder analysis framework in the early chapters showed me that I was consistently underinvesting in upfront stakeholder identification. The improvements I made to my kickoff process have already reduced resistance and rework on three recent projects. Excellent practical value.
The RACI chart and the two stakeholder register templates saved me hours on my current project. Beyond the tools, the guidance on building a stakeholder engagement plan and a communications plan is clear and easy to apply. A very practical resource for business analysts.
The writing is straightforward and the frameworks are explained with relatable examples, which made it easy to follow as someone whose first language is not English. The stakeholder mapping models, including the salience model and the onion diagram, are laid out simply. It has become my go-to reference for engaging difficult stakeholders.
Managing cross-functional projects means managing stakeholders with very different priorities and power dynamics.
