Picardi gives us an excellent introduction to emotional intelligence, explaining why it is important and offering practical ways to benefit from it. This concise summary of the research behind EI uses clear examples to make a strong case for its relevance to each of us. Highly recommended!
-- Michael Nielsen, Professor of Psychology, Georgia Southern University
I was able to finish the book this evening, and I wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it. I believe these are important topics that should be covered in our schools from Kindergarten on up and I think this text would create a solid foundation for a high school or early college population.
The book is extremely accessible and relatable, yet firmly grounded in research. I appreciated the practical approach to the complex concepts that were addressed, and there were many thought-provoking examples given. If woven into the curriculum, I believe this material would have a positive, lasting effect on students.
-- Jennifer Doran, Professor of Psychology, North Central Texas College
Consider this scenario. You’re reviewing a team member’s performance, and you tell them they need to work on becoming more emotionally intelligent. What does that even mean? How do you measure that? In her book, Emotional Intelligence Essentials, Dr. Carrie Picardi demystifies emotional intelligence (EI). Her book provides a clear set of attributes and skills practitioners can leverage in their professional and personal lives to become truly emotionally intelligent. This is the comprehensive guide to EI you didn’t know you needed, delivered in Dr. Picardi’s wonderfully readable and warm prose. I expect it to become the go-to EI guide with a place of pride in the boardroom, classroom, and living room for years to come.
-- Michael Lohle, Ph.D., University of Bridgeport, Retired
Emotional Intelligence Essentials is a practical guide to understanding how emotions shape communication, leadership, decision-making, and relationships. Dr. Carrie Picardi goes beyond explaining emotional intelligence by including chapter quizzes, workplace case studies, self-assessments, reflection journal templates, and communication exercises that help readers apply each concept instead of simply reading about it.
I appreciated that the book stays grounded in everyday situations rather than abstract theory. The focus is on building skills gradually, whether that's becoming a better listener, handling conflict more effectively, or recognizing emotional patterns before they affect your decisions. The practical exercises make it easy to stop and reflect on how the ideas apply to your own experiences. My sincere thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a free advance review copy.
-- Melanie Green, Blogger, USA
This is great information! There are multiple generations of all education levels that could really use this book!
-- Rachel Phillips, Netgalley Reviewer
I'd heard of EQ before, but this book explained how emotional intelligence actually looks in terms of personality, stress management, communication, and other aspects of life. It's structured like a textbook, but it's not a dry analysis; it also provides advice and guidance for application using real-world examples. Mental health and emotional intelligence really do go hand in hand, since identifying a problem is the first step to healing.
-- Avery Lemmon, Netgalley Reviewer
